Early life

Rashid Khan was born on 20 September 1998 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. He grew up in a large family in Jalalabad. His family fled the war and lived in Pakistan for a few years before returning home, and the family ran a tyre business in Nangarhar. He started playing with a tennis ball, teaching himself leg-spin by watching Shahid Afridi and Anil Kumble. Nobody coached him; he copied what he saw on television and practised on his own. He studied computer science at Islamia College Peshawar until 2013, and came to prominence in 2014 in matches in Peshawar when Afghanistan toured Pakistan.

Family and personal life

Rashid comes from a large family: he has ten siblings, six brothers and four sisters. His father, Haji Khalil, died in Peshawar in December 2018, and his mother died in June 2020; her name was never made public. He married in October 2024, and again in August 2025, and he has kept his wife's identity private. He does not share details of his private life publicly.

Domestic and franchise career

Rashid's franchise career began with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL in 2017, where he took 93 wickets in 76 matches across five seasons. He moved to Gujarat Titans in 2022, winning the title in their debut season as vice-captain and taking 27 wickets in 2023, his most productive IPL season. He has also played for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash, winning the title in his first season, Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, and Trent Rockets in The Hundred. He captains MI Cape Town in South Africa's SA20, a different MI franchise from MI Emirates. In the ILT20 he first played for MI Emirates in Season 1 in 2023, returned in Season 4 in December 2025 as an injury replacement, and was pre-signed for Season 5.

International career

Rashid made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on 18 October 2015, and his T20I debut against the same opponents eight days later. His Test debut came against India in Bengaluru on 14 June 2018, in Afghanistan's first-ever Test. He became the youngest ODI captain at 19 years and 165 days in March 2018, and the youngest Test captain at 20 years and 350 days in September 2019, when he took a ten-wicket haul and scored a fifty as Afghanistan beat Bangladesh. He captained Afghanistan to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup and remains the side's T20I captain.
