He came through Somerset's youth teams at under-13, under-15 and under-17 level, and made his senior club debut for Cheddar before playing for Glastonbury in the 2006 season at the age of 15. His school career peaked in April 2008, when he scored 227 not out in a 50-over national schools game, sharing a record opening stand of 340 with Alex Barrow. He captained King's in 2008 and 2009, was named the 2010 Young Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year, and made his first-class debut for Somerset against Lancashire at Taunton in September 2009, scoring 30 as a replacement for the injured Justin Langer.

They have three children: daughters Georgia Rose, born in April 2019, and Margot, born in September 2021, and a son, Charlie, born in 2024. Domestic and franchise career

In the IPL he played for Mumbai Indians in 2016 and 2017, then for Rajasthan Royals from 2018 to 2024, where his 2022 season brought 863 runs, four centuries, the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award. He moved to Gujarat Titans in 2025. He has also played for Paarl Royals and Durban's Super Giants in South Africa's SA20, and for Manchester's franchise in The Hundred. He became England's white-ball captain in June 2022 after Eoin Morgan's retirement and led England to the 2022 T20 World Cup title, finishing as the side's top scorer, before resigning on 28 February 2025.
