Early life

Faf du Plessis was born on 13 July 1984 in Pretoria, South Africa. He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria, where AB de Villiers was a schoolmate, and came through domestic cricket with Northerns and Titans. He also played county cricket for Lancashire in England. His international break came late by modern standards: he was 26 when he made his ODI debut in 2011, after years of domestic runs, and he built a reputation as a tough, athletic fielder as well as a batter.

Family and personal life

Faf married Imari Visser in November 2013. The couple have two daughters. He keeps his family life largely private, and this page does not publish details beyond what has been shared publicly.

Domestic and franchise career

Du Plessis played for Northerns and Titans in South Africa and for Lancashire in county cricket. In the IPL he joined Chennai Super Kings in 2011 and was part of their title-winning sides in 2018 and 2021, after a spell with Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017. He captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2022 to 2024 and played for Delhi Capitals in 2025. He has also captained Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket and Joburg Super Kings in South Africa's SA20. The ILT20 is his newest stop: Dubai Capitals signed him for USD 300,000 at the Season 5 auction and made him captain.

International career

Du Plessis made his ODI debut against India at Cape Town on 18 January 2011, scoring an unbeaten 60. His T20I debut followed against England on 8 September 2012. His Test debut came against Australia at Adelaide in November 2012, when he scored 78 in the first innings and a match-saving 110 not out in the second. He took over as South Africa's Test captain in December 2016 and captained the side in all three formats from 2017, leading them at the 2019 ODI World Cup. His last Test came against Pakistan in February 2021, when he retired from Test cricket.
