Hemang Badani: Personal life

Badani was born into a Gujarati family in Madras. He is married with children.

Playing career

Badani played for India between 2000 and 2004: four Tests and 40 ODIs. He made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup in 1999-2000 and received his Test cap against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2001, and his maiden ODI century came against Australia at Pune in 2000-01. He was part of the India squad that finished as runners-up at the 2000 Champions Trophy. At domestic level he played for Tamil Nadu from 1996 to 2007, and later for Haryana, Rajasthan and Vidarbha, playing his final first-class game for Vidarbha against Punjab in 2013 and retiring at 37. He also played for Chennai Superstars in the breakaway Indian Cricket League in 2007-08, which brought a ban from the Indian board before an amnesty cleared his return to domestic cricket.

Coaching career

Badani has been head coach of Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League from the league's first season, winning three titles there, and he coached Jaffna Kings to two consecutive Lanka Premier League titles. In the IPL he was Sunrisers Hyderabad fielding coach from 2021 to 2023 and then their batting coach, and he was batting coach of Sunrisers Eastern Cape when they won the inaugural SA20 in 2023. He was head coach of Dubai Capitals when they reached the ILT20 final in 2024 and won the title in 2025, beating Desert Vipers by four wickets in the Dubai final, and he has worked as a coaching consultant with Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket. In October 2024 he was appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, replacing Ricky Ponting after a seven-year stint, and the side finished fifth in 2025 with 15 points, one point short of the playoffs. He was also appointed head coach of Southern Brave in The Hundred from the 2026 season.

Conclusion

Badani's Season 5 job is to take Dubai Capitals back to the title they won in 2025, this time with Faf du Plessis as captain. His record says he knows how to win franchise titles; the Capitals need one more run to add another ILT20 title to that list.
